Australia Amidst The Economic Dilemmas

With all the things that are happening in Australia, business visa holders are getting worried that the country's economy might be affected. Thus, they are urging the Australian government to take action and come up with solutions to the country's economic problems. It should be noted that Australia has one of the fastest growing economies in the world today. However, this does not mean that the country is free from any serious economic troubles. In fact, there are actually several matters that the country needs to resolve in order to maintain its current growth.

One of these major concerns here is with regards to a looming shortage of workers in the country. As one might have already, Australia has quite a small population (22 million) as compared to that of other developed countries. Thus, it has become heavily dependent on immigrant labor in order to sustain its current economic growth. However, as a lot of people might have already known, the Australian government, through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, have instituted several changes to its immigration policies. Officials said that these reforms are intended to cut down on the excessive numbers of people entering the country. But many economic analysts and business people are worried that such a move can take away the immigrant numbers for labor.

And during the elections held last August, both the contending Labor and Liberal Parties are actually pushing for reduction in immigration numbers. This added to the worries by business people that a labor shortage would be indeed imminent. Newly elected Prime Minister Julia Gillard was, however, quick to allay these fear. She then laid out her so called sustainable population plan. Here, she said that immigration cuts would still push through. However, she added that immigration intake would be carefully managed in order to better take on the needs of the economy.

Another issue of major concern for many businesses in the country is the imminent pull out of stimulus packages. These packages where handed out by the government to companies in order to sustain them during the financial crisis that hit the world in 2007. And with the world's economy now returning to normal level, many analysts are predicting that the government will pull out the support. But not a few business are arguing that it might be to early to pull out the economic package. As it is, companies recover at different rates, which means that there are still those who have not yet completely  returned. However, the government assured that it will carefully study the situation first before going on a pull out.

And this one is actually not the end of the economic worries that Australia has to deal with. As it is, while the country was indeed able to recover from the world crisis relatively scratch free, there are still a lot of things that needed to be dealt with in order to fully return to its normal economic levels. And this is something that the Australian government needs to work hard on.

Immigration Numbers Going Down

One of the countries that have been popular with many people planning immigrations is Australia. In fact, this can be easily proved by the long lines of Australian immigration applicants getting their visas in the embassies daily. However, the status of immigration in the country seems to be on the verge of change. According to the latest statistics, long term immigration to the land down under has actually gone down by a significant level. In a tally provided by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) long term stay arrivals for the month of February dropped by around 44 percent as compared to the numbers posted in January. The DIAC further added that the number of permanent residency arrivals also fell by almost the same mark for the the month.

One of the biggest contributing factors that officials say affected the number of immigrants coming to the country were the recent changes made by the immigration department to the Skilled Migration Program. These changes involved removing more than a hundred low level positions from the Skilled Occupation List to make way for more high level positions. The department said that these moves were necessary in order to cope up with the shortage of high level workers that the country is currently experiencing. However, many experts said that the move is likely to affect the number of immigrants coming to the country. They said that many of the people coming in to Australia do so by getting low level positions. They added that the removal of these jobs from the list effectively stops a large number of applicants from coming into the country.

Experts also said that these changes also severely affected the number of foreign students enrolling in the country. Since many of these students are taking vocational courses in preparation for filing of permanent residency in the country (which was trhe norm before), the removal of these positions from the list meant that their opportunities have now been cut. Furthermore, they said, the stricter skills requirements have also greatly limited the number of applicants that will be able to enter the country.

Another major factor that many say contributed to the decline in immigration to Australia in the last few months is the stricter security measures that are being implemented by the DIAC on applicants. One of these is the proposed issuance of biometric visas to applicants coming from so called high risk countries.those applicants coming from these countries have said that these moves are seemingly done to prevent them from entering the country, a claim that the DIAC has refuted. However, the immigration department is optimistic that migration rates will be up again in the coming months. They also added that the initial effects of the changes are only temporary and will likely wane down from here on.

The Issue Of A Big Australia Author

With all the happenings going on with regards to Australia immigration visa, business visa holders, as well as others who want to travel there are worried how these will affect their chances of getting in. and with the elections in the country just a few months away, many of them are crossing their fingers that the policies would become favorable to them.

One of the most crucial of the many issues on immigration that is being closely monitored, not only by incoming foreigners but also the local people, is the so called big Australia policy. What this is basically is an attempt to attract more people to move into the country and increase its population. While the country is a large one, with an area of over 7.6 million square kilometers, it has a relatively small population of only a little over 22 million.

One of the biggest reason why some people thing that the big Australia policy is much needed by the country is because of its economy. The Australian economy is actually one of the fastest growing in the world today. In fact, there are a lot of new businesses being opened in the country yearly. However, because its population is small, Australia can not cope up with the labor demands of its economy. Thus it regularly gets workers from the thousands of immigrants that move in to the country each year.

The policy has, in fact, been espoused by former Prime Minister John Howard during his term. Howard's policies with regard to immigration was rather lax at that time, allowing a lot of foreigners to enter the country and work. In fact, it was during his time that Australia experienced one of its largest immigration booms for some time.

Interestingly, current Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who succeeded Howard, was initially also for the big Australia policy. However, once elected, he quickly changed his views and decided that a big population would not be in the best interest of the country. Thus, upon his ascension to the Prime Minister position, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship immediately began changing its regulations in that direction.

And those that go against the policy does have valid reasons to do so. One of their biggest contention is that a bigger population would not really do much for the country, but instead contribute to the faster depletion of its resources. Many critics of the policy are also concerned about the quality of incoming workers, as many of them are not qualified for the positions needed by the country, thus creating the current worker shortage in some industries.

It is unlikely that the issue would be resolved any time soon. And for the meantime, all the would be immigrants can do is wait as to what happens next.

The Dilemma Of Australian Immigration Control

One of the biggest issues that Australian immigration officials have dealt with in recent years is that immigration control. And as the number of of people that gets into Australia keeps increasing every year, this is actually getting even much harder for authorities to deal with. Sadly, this is not helped by the conflicting viewpoints of many people in the country has. Deciding on who is allowed to enter the country is perhaps the the must difficult aspect of this issue. We only need to look back at the country's immigration history in order to see how things got really complicated.

In the early years of Australia's establishment as country, it experienced significant economic boom. Thus, in order to make good use of this development, the government encouraged migrants from other countries to come to Australia. However, as the immigrants did come in in significant number, this move eventually led to competition with the local people who then clamored for control over the influx of immigrants. In response, the government then decide to set up stricter policies on immigrants, which was inevitably denounced by both immigrants and locals alike as being too suppressive.

As you can see, the issue of immigration control in Australia is a rather tight one. As the Australian government tries to meet the demands of the country, it has to walk a tight balance between what would be beneficial to the Australian population as whole and what the Aussies themselves would want. And this actually gets even tighter as modern issues comes into play.

One of such issues is that of global terrorism. As the world is gripped by fear as to where the next terror attack will happen, Australia tries hard to secure its borders. It carefully screens incoming immigrants to determine potential terrorist elements. However, as it attempts to do its best on this part, concerns are being raised about its selective nature, shutting out people who have to right to enter the country, simply because they come from places suspected of terrorism. This have actually led the Australian government to walk the tightrope again.

It is not surprising that the issue has become such a hot topic in Australia. It has between fiercely debated by both sides of the government, and it has become a favorite material among commentators and experts. However, it would be interesting to know its effects on the immigrants themselves. For the most part, it would be a rather minor hassle on the visa application. But for those immigrants that are greatly affected by immigration control, it might actually be the end of their hopes for a better life in Australia.

Australia Strengthens Border Protection

It is probably one of the biggest issues that affects the country nowadays. With the Australian economy getting much of its labor force from immigrants, one can see how important this one is to the country. Thus, the government closely monitors the situation in order to ensure that everything goes on well. Here, one of the major concerns that the Australian government is closely monitoring is that of border security. Indeed, while Australia is actually welcoming of immigrants, it is also closely watching against those that attempt to enter the counter without using legal means. As it is, because the country is considered as a land of opportunity for a lot of people, many attempt to get here without going through proper documentations.

Boat people and asylum seekers are probably some of the most common concerns for Australia's border security group. It should be noted that, although Australia has regularly entertained asylum seekers, it has still to deal with the matter of those people coming in from undocumented boats. Because many of these people have no proper papers, they are often regarded as illegal immigrants by the border security group. In order to deal with this, the government has introduced tighter measures to improve its border security capabilities.

Since early last year, the border patrol has been investing on new equipment that will further enhance their work. This include several new aircraft for conducting a wide area survey of the border. And just recently, new Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that they will be also fielding in eight new boats to add to the current border security fleet of 18. she added that these new boats will greatly help in having faster reaction and interception capabilities for the fleet against illegal boats.

In line with the move, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship is also carefully planning the establishment of more overseas processing centers in the countries around them. This, according to immigration officials, will greatly help in speeding up refugee processing. It should be noted that the immigration department has been criticized before for the slow turnout of asylum applications. One of the countries being studied for a possible location of a processing center is East Timor.

The immigration department is also closely working together with other countries, like Indonesia and Malaysia, in combating human smuggling operations. Human smuggling has been a major problem that the department is dealing with. Officials said that the efforts will also greatly help in protecting refugees who are often the ones being victimized by these.

Australia is Still Needing Skilled Migrants From All Over the World

For the financial year 2005-2006, Australian immigration has successfully attracted more than 130,000 people, 8,000 more than the previous year. This year 2007, if things are to go smoothly, Minister for Immigration Amanda Vanstone said the government is targeting 140,000. That's 140,000 new skilled and professional migrants who will be granted their Australian visa and living the good life there. Australia's labor shortage is still on the rise, and it's campaign to attract overseas workers has helped the booming economy.

For years, Australia has been a favorite immigration destination of the world. The reasons: high standards of living at a low cost, plenty of work opportunities, warm climate, safe surroundings, quality education (for people wanting to study in Australia), and most important of all, friendly people who would welcome anyone into the community. The figures for 2005-06 is in fact the biggest recorded intake of immigrants in almost 20 years. No wonder Australia is one of the most-diverse and culturally rich countries in the world.

Immigrants' Choices

It used to be that more immigrants chose New South Wales to settle in—after all, New South Wales is home to the vibrant city of Sydney, both the mecca for job opportunities and established migrant communities. For 2005-2006, NSW topped among the other states, with 44,661 migrants coming in. These days though, people migrate to all states in Australia and are finding out that other states have excellent opportunities to offer as well. People who want to avail of their Australian working visa are advised to take online visa assessments to see their chances at a sucessful entry into Australia.

Australian visa application is based on a points system, for example if his/her profession falls under the list of in-demand jobs in Australia. Accordingly, the more points a skilled migrant earns, the faster his/her visa will be processed. Last year, some 59,507 skilled professionals settled in Australia, while family visas attracted 34,771 arrivals.
